Beware It is not safe to swim in ditches, bayous, and Lakes at this time…

DANGER!

Do Not Swim in Ditches, Lakes, or Bayous

Due to Hurricane Ike, many of the waterways in our community have become increasingly contaminated with bacteria and toxins.   Health risks that could occur from exposure to these waters include diarrhea, gastrointestinal infections and various bacterial infections, including potentially deadly bacterial infections such as tetanus (lockjaw).

Harris County Public Health & Environmental Services strongly advises residents not to swim, bathe or play in ditches, bayous, creeks or lakes because of these health risks.   In addition, residents are reminded that they should never enter waters that you cannot see through, that may have a swift undercurrent or may contain debris.

As always, never leave children unattended around water, including swimming pools, even if they know how to swim.

Protect your family and your community from injuries and drowning.

Unincorporated Harris County Residents Urged to Properly Separate Debris Most common requests/issues related to debris management Harris County would like to provide residents of Unincorporated Harris County useful information related to the proper separation of debris after Hurricane Ike.

For further questions, residents of Unincorporated Harris County are urged to call (800) 207-2325 between the hours of 8 AM to 8 PM.

City of Houston residents please call 311.

In the event that a tree has fallen on your house, in your yard, or is blocking your driveway, you should move it to the right-of-way for pick-up. The right-of-way is defined as the property generally located between the edge of the private property line, sidewalk, or ditch and the street.

Remember that County debris haulers are not allowed to remove debris from private property. As a resident you are required to move the debris to the right-of-way or hire a private contractor to move it for you. If you are unable to move the debris due to a disability, please contact volunteer groups to move the debris to the right-of-way.

Volunteers from CERT can be requested at (713) 881-3100.

To ensure that your debris will be picked up, please separate in piles by vegetative debris (branches, limbs, and shrubbery) and by construction debris (shingles, sidings, treated wood).

Tree limbs should be cut in 10′ pieces.

Household Hazardous waste (paint, cleaning products, batteries, etc) should be gathered and disposed of at Household Hazardous Waste events. Call (713) 290-3000 to find the next scheduled event.

Contact CenterPoint Energy at (713) 207-2222 if there is a tree resting on power lines, or if a power pole is down.

If there is a tree across the roadway, please report it to our hotline at (800) 207-2325 so that it can be reported to appropriate County personnel.

If you don’t have property insurance or available funds to fix the damage, you may contact FEMA IA (Individual Assistance) Program at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or www.fema.gov ### http://ohsem.newsrouter.com/
